bullet  General Notes:

It thought that Maria might be a Brobst or Probst

From Janet Binkly <jrbinkly@comcast.net>

I have a possibility for Peter FRIESS's first wife Maria, whom we know
as Maria from her dau Anna Barbara bapt 1784 at Allemangel:
The BROBST reunion booklet of 1936, p. 17, says Maria BROBST, dau. of
Michael BROBST [1721-1771] and his 2nd wf Elisabeth "Marilis" ALBRIGHT
/ALBRECHT [1729-1767] was 12 when her father d. in 1771 [= b. 1759],
and was m. to Peter FREAS. This is our clue.
She also appears: Mentioned Nov. 1771 as Maria under age 21 in Berks
Orphan's Court Docket D, p.129, and pp. 110, 113, 114 in Record Bk,
with guardians Jacob GERTNER, Fredk. HILL, & Val. PROBST.
Also: 17 Dec 1771 in Northampton Co Orphan?s Court, Estate of Michael
BROBST, miller, died about 5 mths ago in Albany Tp Berks Co.-- request
inquest: ?Land situate in Lynn Tp adjoining the Proprietary 300 ac and
Land of Jacob FRIES, Jacob BÄRR, and Valentine BROBST containing 250
ac....?, widow Margaret [Sybilla Margaretha of the many husbands], a
list of 10 children with Henry the eldest son, Martin, John, and the
remaining 7 are minors under age 21: the last named is Maria.
This Maria aka Anna Maria Barbara BROBST b. abt 1759 would be the
right age to be the first wife of Peter FRIES b. 1757. When her father
died, her stepmother was Peter FRIESS's mother Sybilla Margaretha, so
Maria had spent a year or so 1770-71 with them all living together on
the BROBST farm.
To date, no one has come up with a death date for Michael BROBST's
youngest daughter Maria --the Brobst website shows her as b. abt 1756
and no husband. If she was indeed the wife of Peter FRIES b. 1757, then
she d. about 1785, because he remarried to Catherine KLINGEMAN 24 Oct
1786. Note that Peter was still single 31 Oct 1779 when he sponsored
bapt of Peter PROBST, son of Johs & Barbara PROPST, at Allemängel,
with co-sponsor Anna Elisabeth STAMBACHIN, so he would have had to
marry Maria BROBST after Nov. 1779; their first dau. would have been
the elusive Dorothea FRIESS, b. abt 1780.
The fact Maria BROBST's middle name was Barbara could have been what
led so many people to think Peter FRIESS had been m. to Barbara
REICHELDERFER.
Note that Maria's dau b. 1784 was named Anna Barbara.
What we need now:
(1) Can someone check the New Bethel church compendium for the birth of
Maria (Anna Maria Barbara) PROBST about 1759? -- I don't have the whole
compendium, am lacking the B's.
(2) Can anyone locate a marriage for Anna or Maria or Barbara PROBST or
BROBST in 1779 or 1780 or latest 1781?
I'm pretty excited about this -- hope you are intrigued, too.

Jan, your theory seems very plausible. That would
explain a lot about the name Brobst popping up everywhere, especially as
sponsors to the one and only baptism we've found so far for Peter and
Maria's daughter Anna Barbara in 1784. The sponsors were John and Barbara
Brobst, who I would imagine would have been the John Brobst, brother to
Anna Maria Barbara Brobst (this would make sense!), and his wife Anna Maria
Barbara Stambach.

A question I would have is, where did the Brobst Reunion booklet get their
claim that Maria, daughter of Michael Brobst, married Peter Freas?? Is
there a document that I'm not remembering?? Should that claim be right,
then I think we've found the right Maria! It would then be interesting to
note that Peter Friess married Anna Maria Barbara Brobst, and his sister,
Anna Maria Catharina Friess, married Martin Brobst. That is, Friess
brother & sister married Brobst brother and sister. This happened a lot
and would be further support to the assumption.

Barbara was baptized 17 July 1785....

From Janet Brinkley to Dianne Quinones

Diana, I believe you have to blame me for the suggestion that Peter FRIESS m. Maria BROBST, the daughter of Peter's 2nd stepfather Michael BROBST. You recall I published that suggestion in my article on Separating the 3 Peters DRIESS - FIES - FRIESS (based on all our FRIESS group's work) that appeared in the Albany Twp Hist Socy newsletter last year.
I'll be surprised if we find any paper records that show her marriage or the births of their first children because the Jerusalem church records have gaps during the Revolution when there was no permanent minister. -- It has occurred to me, however, that I have never seen a full listing of marriages and baptisms by Rev. Daniel LEHMAN, who was providing services to Albany from 1780 onwards -- if we could locate a complete transcription of his records, we might find something that has been missed.
Here's what I have in my notes for Maria:
" The Brobst reunion booklet 19 July 1936 p. 17 says she was was m. to Peter FREAS (Friesz); she was12 when father d. in 1771 [= b. 1759] and Peter was living there, too. [A copy of this booklet is owned by Jan Binkley, purchased in 2005 from Wm. A. Brobst.]
Have concluded she was a BROBST although no one has found marriage data. Do have data on her existence and figure she had to have met the FRIESS family when Peter's widowed mother married Maria's widowed father in 1770. Note that Maria?s brother Martin BROBST married Peter FRIESS?s sister Anna Maria Catharina after the two families had lived together on the BROBST plantation.
She was called Maria when mentioned Nov. 1771 as under age 21 in Berks Orphan's Court Docket D p.129, and pp 110, 113, 114 in Record Bk, with guardians Jacob GERTNER, Fredk. HILL, & Valentine PROBST.
17 Dec 1771 Northampton Co Orphan?s Court, Estate of Michael BROBST, miller, died about 5 mths ago in Albany Tp Berks Co.-- request inquest: ?Land situate in Lynn Tp adjoining the Proprietary 300 ac and Land of Jacob FRIES, Jacob BÄRR, and Valentine BROBST containing 250 ac....?, widow Margaret [the former widow FRIESS & STEIGERWALD], 10 children with Henry the eldest son, Martin, John, and the remaining 7 are minors under age 21: the last named is Maria, so she was probably the youngest..
Assume she m. Peter FRIESS about 1780, because he was single when he sponsored bapt of Joh. Peter BROBST 31 Oct 1779 at Jerus (Red) Ch. Would have expected her to marry at Jerusalem Ch., but there was no pastor 1774-1778, just visits by Rev. MÜHLENBERG; Frederick MILLER was pastor from 1777 to spring 1780; thereafter Rev. Daniel LEHMAN served for 30 years, supposedly 1780-1810, but he was apparently not resident in Albany but came up from the church at Moselem (where he is buried), and the registry of births & baptisms shows a gap between Nov. 1781 and July 1784, during the Revolution -- it was during this period of turmoil that Peter & Maria must have married and had their first children.
Peter's first wife is known for sure as Maria from bapt register of dau. Anna Barbara June/July 1784/85 at Jerus (Red) Ch.
If Maria did m. her stepbrother Peter FRIESS, note that his sister Anna Maria Catharina FRIESS also married Maria?s brother Martin BROBST.
Husband Peter FRIESS remarried 1786, so assume Maria d. abt 1785."

Most interesting is your question about Magdalena FRIESS's mother!
7. Magdalena Fries, born Bet. 1780 - 1781; died Abt. 1836 in Albany Twp, Berks Co, Pennsylvania.

She was the daughter of 14. Peter Friess and 15. Maria Brobst?.
We have never known who Maria was. Where did you find that she could be a BROBST!
I like that idea - just need to find some proof!
